Root-choked drains and hot water systems giving out without warning are the two calls we get most from this pocket of Ku-ring-gai, and both trace back to the same source: how old the housing is.

Eryldene, the heritage-listed Federation house and garden on McIntosh Street, is a fair marker for the vintage of plumbing across the suburb. Its Queen Anne and bungalow-style homes went up mostly between 1890 and 1915 on generous leafy blocks.
